2020 Minor League Y Draft Recap

In this league, we ran an important test by accidentally leaving kickers in the draft. First, we proved that no one read through the rules and made sure the league looked correct. Second, some people think it is a good idea to draft a kicker before the final round. Finally, ESPN is very difficult to correct mistakes and clean up errors.
This league was quite patient when it came to QBs and glancing through all the picks, some people really went and got their guy at other positions. It is a lot more fun when people take a stand for who they believe in. It also makes this more fun to write. Tom Brady in the 2nd round as the 4th overall QB….I don’t know. In the end, this league looks very close (except the auto drafter). It was extremely hard to determine who was in the champions league and who was in the minors. I could even see the teams slated for amateurs having a shot at the champions league if one or two things break right.
Boned by Boone – 1st Pick Prediction – Minor Leagues
Jonathan Taylor in the 4th is the highest I have seen him taken. This could certainly work out, but the colts still have Mack atop their depth chart at the time of writing this. Boone may have waited a bit too long on QB. Garappolo and Burrow make for an interesting pair. Burrow has a huge range of outcomes while Garappolo is pretty safe with a low ceiling. There are some nice value plays late with Damien Harris, Mattison, Chris Thompson, and Dwayne Haskins. I think they will be on the edge of the playoffs but I don’t think they will be promoted this year.
Team Lewis – 2nd Pick Prediction – Champions League
4 starting running backs and 4 QBs could be a winning formula this year. Deebo and Preston Williams in rounds 8 and 10 fill in any gaps at WR for a very low cost. The only problem I see on this team is some old players getting injured. Roethlisberger, Brees, Melvin Gordon, and David Johnson are all risks in this area. The depth on this team should allow them to overcome any small injuries and keep working their way into the Champions League.
Bob Loblaw’s Law Blog – 3rd Pick Prediction – Champions League
For a second straight year, I am glad this review is only in text. Still, this league takes twice as long as I try to write and say in my head Bob Loblaw’s Law Blog over and over. My Loblaw’s Law Blog started out with some solid picks. Wentz and Ryan at QB in rounds 4 and 5 give a strong starting core. The blog went bobbing for RB2s and came up with two rookies in Akers and Dobbins with huge upside. Latavius Murray and Cooks could also be contributors at points in the season. The Law Blog showed how Bob Loblaw hit the low lob pitch out of the park with these mid-round picks. Overall, I think this team squeezes into the playoffs and grabs that all-important win.
Boston Sea Dragons – 4th Pick Prediction – Amateur Hour League
Picking in 4th in Minor League Y for the 2nd straight year is the Boston Sea Dragons. 6 of 9 picks from round 3 to 11 were WRs. This is a bit strange considering a max of 4 can be started each week and realistically a good team is only starting 3. We do see the impact play out at RB and QB. Kareem Hunt and Boston Scott are holding down the RB2 spot and the Sea Dragons are hoping Tua gets the start sooner rather than later so Darnold can go to the bench. I think this team is going to get a bit uneven during the season and we are going to some struggles from the Dragons.
Scott County FC – 5th Pick Prediction – Amateur Hour League
We would like to interrupt the regularly programmed draft recap for this special announcement. You need to update your draft ranks if you are going to miss the draft. 1 QB who isn’t starting won’t cut it. Sure there are lots of great WRs but this team will need to make many good trades to stay in contention.
Fresh Prince of Hel-Aire – 6th Pick Prediction – Champions League
Now, this is a story all about how this draft got flipped turned upside down. And I’d like to take a minute to sit right here, I’ll tell you how they won with a player called Hel-Air. In this draft, picked and chosen, on the RBs and QBs is where this team spent most of their days. Chilling out, maxing, flexing all cool and all picking some ceivers late in the draft, when a couple of managers who were on auto, started making trouble in the draft room. They got in one little fight and the commish got scared and said you are moving up with your team and Hel-Aire.
Team Begun – 7th Pick Prediction – Minor Leagues
2 RBs plus a backup. 2 solid starting QBs. Fill your team with upside. Check, Check, Check. I would like to see a little more depth at RB especially since Gurley wasn’t exactly a star last year. But still, this team is going to be tough to beat each week. They will want to trade some of those WRs before the auto-draft team floods the market with cheap talent. The only difference between this team and the previous team is one had a cool name so I am going to give them the spot in the Champions League.
Team Leonard – 8th Pick Prediction – Amateur Hour League
Another solid team. RB was locked up after choosing last year’s MVP. Then David Montgomery late with some other upside picks gives this team good depth behind the top-end talent. We will need to see more out of Le’Veon, JuJu, and TY if this team really wants to make some noise in the league. All of them have done it, but two of the three really need to show up in a big way. I don’t think the production will be consistent enough from these 3. If Leonard can pivot from them at the right times, this team could compete. However, a couple of rough weeks and they will be playing from behind all season.
Team Nakagawa – 9th Pick Prediction – Amateur Hour League
It is unfortunate when the value of a big player changes between the draft and the start of the season. Fournette taken in the 4th now represents someone at best in a committee, but there is still a chance he has a good year. Unfortunately, this also hurts the 5th round pick as Nakagawa now has the main two pieces in the TB backfield so hopefully one of them steps up or maybe McKinnon comes back to life as the best 17th round pick. Russel Wilson rounds out one of the strongest QB tandems in the league and the TEs are strong for this team. If the RB situation is sorted out, this team still has a chance at staying in the Minor Leagues.
Cheesy Poofs – 10th Pick Prediction – Champions League
With the other Camins in the Champions League, the Poofs took a slightly unconventional strategy picking up 3 QBs in the first 7 rounds. With Michael Thomas in the first, this could put the team at risk in terms of running backs. The recent rise of Antonio Gibson may have taken this team from weak at RB to a strong contender across the board. A tandem at TE with Hooper and Hurst ensures a quality TE because either Hooper is an excellent player or the Falcons like to throw to a TE. Either way means points for the Poofs. This team is well set for a strong season.
Team Eline – 11th Prediction – Minor Leagues
Team Eline, named in homage to the great commissioner I am guessing, has created a strong draft. Opening up with 2RBs and 2WRs gives a solid foundation. Waiting on QB in this league was not punished as they wind up with Mayfield and Danny Dimes, two quarterbacks with high upside. They were even able to grab Ertz who seems to surprise every year now by not fading away and ceding catches to Goedert. They even picked up Drew Lock who could be a QB1 or could be out of a job in 5 weeks. However, I have to leave them just outside of the Champions League this year.
Team Haggard – 12th Prediction – Minor Leagues
This team went for a very similar roster construction as Team Eline. Start with RBs and get some solid WRs. Finish it off with an above-average TE. Unfortunately, the QB2 played by Rivers or Tyrod leaves some doubts on this team. I don’t think there is as much late-round upside outside of Philip Lindsay. Certainly, a solid well built team but it is going to be so close as to who makes it out of the league. I think Haggard is going to fall just short this year.
